About
the Artists
Prapancham Balachandran
(Carnatic Flute)
Sri.Prapancham S. Balachandran
is an ‘A-Top’ graded Carnatic flautist who
hails family of illustrious musicians. His
mother, Thanjavur V.Prema, is a reputed
Carnatic vocalist. He underwent initial
training in Carnatic music and flute from
Sangeetha Bhooshanam Pozhakudi Sri P.V.
Ganesa Iyer and Kattuputhur Smt T.R.
Nagarathinam Ammal.
He later underwent professional training
in Flute under Sangeetha Kalanithi
Padmasri Dr. N. Ramani for more than 35
years and has also performed alongside him
in a number of concerts. Being one of the
senior most disciples of Dr N.Ramani, he
currently plays an active role in
propagating the Carnatic Flute through
teaching and lecture demonstrations.
As a Guru, Shri Prapancham Balachandran’s
unique teaching methods have proved so
effective that some of his students are
now graded artists of All India Radio.
Also a post graduate in Music, he has
presented numerous research papers and
lecture demonstrations. Sri.Prapancham S.
Balachandran is a State level Gold
Medallist adjudged by none other than the
legendary Dr.Semmengudi Sri.R.Srinivasa
Iyer.
He is also recipient of numerous awards
and titles that include ‘Flute Mali Award’
by the Madras Music Academy, ‘Venugana
Rathna’ by Sangeeta Mumurthigal Committee,
‘Mathura Murali Puraskar’ by Dr.
Balamuralikrishna, Vipanchee and so on. He
was conferred with the title ‘Pullankuhal
Innisaivendu’ by Tamil Nadu Mangalavadya
Isai Kalaigar Sangam, Chennai in the year
2001.

(Violin)
Parur M. A.
Krishnaswamy is a violinist in the Carnatic
tradition who hails from the legendary Parur
family of violinists.
He is the son of violin vidwan Parur M. S.
Anantharaman and the grandson of Parur
Sundaram Iyer The Parur style of violin
playing is known for it's distinctive
one-finger and long-bow techniques. He
underwent rigorous training under his
grandfather in addition to imbibing technique
from listening to his father and uncle, Parur
M. S. Gopalakrishnan.
He had the unique
opportunity to play his maiden performance
with his grandfather Shri Parur A.Sundaram
Iyer in 1965 at Shri Thyagaraja Sangeetha
Vidwath Samajam, Mylapore, Chennai. He started
giving violin duets with his father from 1972
and also started accompanying leading artists
in the carnatic music field.
In his professional
career of nearly five decades, he has
accompanied the several stalwarts including
Semmangudi Sreenivasa Iyer, D K Jayaram, R K
Srikantan, T K Govinda Rao, Smt Brinda &
Mukta, M L Vasanthakumari, and D K Pattammal.
Parur M. A.
Krishnaswamy, his son Parur M.S.
Ananthakrishnan and daughter Parur
M.S.Ananthasree in AIR and Doordarshan as well
as many public performances both in
India and abroad. He joined the AIR in 1985 as
violin staff artiste. He has given many
special programmes such as south zone hookups,
chain booking programs, national programs and
sangeeth sammelan. He has been part of the 72
mela kartha tala yagnya conducted at AIR
Pondicherry. Since joining the AIR he
got opportunities to accompany many stalwarts
regularly at their special requests and thus
has become one of the most sought after
violinist. He is now a “TOP RANK” artiste in
AIR.
In 1985 he visited
USSR to participate in the 12th International
Youth Festival. Since then, he has made
several concert tours to USA, UK, Malaysia,
Australia, France, Germany, & Belgium
Shertalai
R Ananthakrishnan
(Mridangam)
Born in a musical
family, Shertalai R Ananthakrishnan has been
initiated into Carnatic Vocal Music by his
mother Lalitha Ramachandran. He had his
initial training in Mridangam at the age of 8
from Vidwan Late K R Bhaskara Kurup.
Later on receiving the Cultural Scholarship
from Govt.of India for advanced studies, he
underwent rigorous training from Vidwan Sri M
Balasubramaniam & also from Vidwan late
Sri Pudukode S Krishnan.

Ananthakrishnan is a top rank (Grade) Staff
Artste of All India Radio, Chennai. He
has received numerous awards and felicitations
such as First Prize Award and Scholarship in
the Kerala Sangeeth Natak Academy Music
Competition in 1988. "Best Mridangist" award
from The Music Academy, Madras in the year
2005 & 2007. Honoured by the Chembai
Trust, Trivandrum in 2000 for his exemplary
talent & skill. Meritorious Award
from Maharajapuram Santhanam Trust,
Chennai in the year 2009. Asthana Vidwan
of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham 2009. Kalaimamani
from Govt.of Tamilnadu for the year 2011.
Being one of the
leading performing Vidwan of the present, he
has carved a niche of himself He has
accompanied all the leading vidwans of
Karnatic Music, both yesteryear and the
present. He has also performed Jugal bandhi
concerts with Hindustani Musicians.
Apart from playing Mridangam, he is also adept
in playing instruments like Ganjira,
Ghatam,Tabla and in reciting Konnakkal.
Most recently, he had the good fortune to
enact as the Mridangam Legend Shri. Palghat
Mani Iyer in the biopic Drama “ManiOsai” in
2016, staged at The Music Academy, Chennai,
which he considers as the greatest ever Life
time Opportunity & Blessing. He had
presented two special Layavinyasam concert in
2013 & 2017, telecast live by SVBC -
Official TV Channel of Tirupati
Devasthanam. He has been featured in the
prestigious National Programme of Music of All
India Radio in 2017 for a special Layavinyasam
concert titled “Navamani Layam”.
D V
Venkatasubramaniam (Ghatam)
Shri D V Venkatasubramaniam (DV) has learned
Mridangam and Ghatam for the past 15 years from
Grammy Award Winner, Padmashri, Shri. Vikku T.H.
Vinayakaram. He is an A Grade Artist in All India
Radio. DV gave hisfirst performance at the age of
18 where he accompanied Dr. Seerkazhi
Sivachidmbaram son of the legendary vocalist Sri
Seerkazhi Govindarajan.
Since then, DV has accompanied with many reputed
artists such as Smt. Nithyasree Mahadevan, Smt
Ranjani and Smt Gayathri, Sri. M.S.
Gopalakrishnan, Smt. Sangeetha Krishnamoorthy, Sri
Sriram Gangadhran. DV has performed in many
sabha’s like Narada Gana Sabha, Krishna Gana
Sabha, Nada Inbham, Tamizhisai Sangam, Mylapore
Fine Arts, Karthick Fine Arts, Kapali Fine Arts,
and many recognized sabha’s in Hyderabad, Pune,
Bombay, Delhi & Kochi in India. He has also
performed in “All India Radio”, “Doordarshan” and
other Satellite Channels.
He has performed under Guru Padmashri Sri. Vikku
Vinayakram’s Sapthakshara Troop in Indonesia &
Malaysia for Festival of India. He has been
part of percussion ensembles led by his guru Sri
Vikku Vinayakaram ji, drummer Shri. Sivamani, and
Shri.V. Selvaganesh. He is also fortunate to have
performed with renowned music director A.R.Rehman
for his recordings. DV holds a Bachelor’s degree
in commerce from Chennai and an MA in Rhythmology
from Madras University.
He has been awarded 'Gadamamani' from Nemili Isai
Mandram and 'Nadhachudar' Lions Club.
