Sri Purbayan Chatterjee is one of the
finest Indian Classical Sitar players
today. He belongs to the famous Senia
Maihar Gharana, the school established by
musical genius Baba Allauddin Khan, the
guru of sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar
Khan. Purbayan was himself a disciple of
the Ustad, and also learned from sitar
greats Pandit Ravi Shankar and Pandit
Nikhil Banerjee. Purbayan is not just a
formidable sitar player, he is also a
multifaceted and versatile musician and
composer. His versatility is evident in
his numerous collaborations with Carnatic
musicians in the South Indian raga
tradition and his fusion projects with
jazz artists all over the globe. He has
received accolades from jazz greats, such
as Chick Corea, Bella Fleck, and Pat
Metheney. Gifted with a soulful
voice, Purbayan is also an accomplished
vocalist.
Purbayan has designed the DWO, which is a
Doppelganger of the Indian Sitar. It
creates sound where the acoustic and the
digital, where the ancient and the modern,
where the ethnic and the urban, where the
esoteric and the virtuosic, all complement
each other and become one. Purbayan has
received several awards and accolades for
his art. He was a recipient of the
President of India Award for Best
Instrumentalist in the country at the age
of 15. He has also received the
prestigious Aditya Vikram Birla Award both
for artistic excellence and for his
contributions to art. He holds highest
artist-grade rating granted by All India
Radio (AIR). Purbayan has performed
extensively and at prestigious venues and
festivals both in India as well as
internationally in his 26-year career.
Venues include Queen Elizabeth Hall,
London, Sydney Opera House and Theatre de
la Ville, Paris.
More information about Purbayan and
samples of his music, as well as links to
his solo performances and multiple
collaborations with classical and jazz
musicians, can be found on his webpage
(http://www.purbayan.com). Today, Purbayan
Chatterjee is a prominent presence on the
current online scene. His forays into
various formats, including ZOOM, for
performing music and for interviewing
artists have taken a life of their own
since the lockdown was implemented and can
be accessed on Facebook, YouTube and
Instagram. Some interesting links are
