About the artists:
Praful Kelkar, was born and grew up in Bombay, India. He is currently on the faculty of the Neurology Department at the University of Minnesota’s School of Medicine. Praful's primary influence in music has been his mother, Dr. Sulochana Kelkar (Ph.D.-music), a professional classical vocalist/teacher in Pune, India and his uncle, who played Sitar in Pt. Uday Shankar’s troupe and taught violin and Sitar for many years. Praful studied Tabla for a number of years at a young age. Later he studied Sitar for three years from a disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar. He has been learning and performing on Sarod since 1994 and is currently training under the renowned Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Praful is currently serving on the Executive Committee of IMSOM.
Nancy Lesh is an award winning cellist who has devoted the last 20 years to the performance of ICM on the Cello. Nancy studied Dhrupad (a style of Indian classical music) for 7 years in India under Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, who was a renowned Dhrupad maestro. Nancy has given scores of Dhrupad recitals internationally and has received rave reviews in numerous publications. Before pursuing Dhrupad, Nancy performed with several orchestras, including the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale of Florence, Italy and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She also was the co-principal cellist of the Rome Festival Orchestra. She has given many lectures and performances at Universities in the USA, has been featured on NPR, and has released two CDs. She resides and teaches in Madison, WI.
Allalaghatta Pavan is a Research Scientist at the Honeywell Laboratories, Minneapolis and is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota’s Computer Science Department. Pavan trained for seven years under Sri. Gandam Laxmiah of Hyderabad, the foremost disciple of the renowned Ustad Sheikh Dawood Khan of the Lucknow/Farrukhabad Gharanas of Tabla. He continues his training in Tabla under eminent visiting artists such as Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Vijay Shankar, Sri. Ambika Prasad Mishra and Sri. Gopal Mishra. He has performed on the Tabla several times in programs presented by the Nritya Jyoti Dance Theater, the IMSOM, the Minnesota Dance Alliance and Pangea World Theater. In 1994, Pavan was the featured Tabla player in Minnesota rock artist James Grant's CD "Not the Only World." In 1996, he co- scripted and co-directed "Shishir Utsav" (Winter Festival), leading a 80 member ensemble in a presentation of Indian classical, folk and light music, dance and theater. Pavan teaches Tabla in the Twin Cities. Pavan has been the President of IMSOM since 1997 and has served IMSOM in various capacities since 1990.
